How will I know if the water is Evaporating?
Evaporation is not filling your pond up all the way one evening, and waking up the next morning to find the water 5 inches lower. That's a leak! Try A simple 24 hour leak test:
Before you start digging up your pond and searching aimlessly for the source of the water loss, you’ll want to determine if the leak is in the waterfall or in the pond by following these steps to eliminate the pond from the equation:
- Make sure the pond is filled to the normal operating level.
- Unplug the waterfall pump(s)
- If you have fish, you’ll want to install a bubbler pump or sub-surface aeration during this test.
- Take note of the pond level and let the pond sit with the waterfall turned off for 24 hours
- If the water level remains the same after 24 hours, then you can assume the pond is in good shape and not leaking.
It Could be a simple Quick fix...Before calling for help, walk around your pond and if you happen to come across a soaking wet area....there's a good chance your leak is nearby! Begin looking for a low edge in the waterfall or stream by carefully checking the perimeters. Once you find an area where water is running over the liner edge, carefully lift up the liner and push some soil under it. That's it, problem solved...your leak is fixed!
Another possibility of what could be causing your pond to loose water can be obstructions in the stream and waterfalls. Keep your pond plants under control by trimming them, check your stream & waterfall for any leaves that might be diverting water outside of the system as well as your biofalls (waterfall) filter box to make sure there is no blockage and water can pass freely. |
